Imagine opening your storybook, you close your eyes, make a wish and suddenly you’re being magically transported into the world of fairytales. Yes, that’s what it feels like entering the beautiful city of Strasbourg. –yes, yes i know this sound a little cheesy but, it’s really an amazing city- Here are five things that will make your visit a wonderland experience.
1. Try the local dishes
The Alsace is known for two special dishes –which you really have to try while you’re in Strasbourg!-. The first one is Spätzle. The dish consist of small pieces of dough, made of flour, eggs and cream which are poached in boiling water. It was different from any other pasta i’ve ever tried. We ate ours at this perfect restaurant in Petite France. The second dish the Alsace is known for is Flammekueche –also known as Tarte Flambée or Flammkuchen- which is a pizza/pancake kinda thingy. It consist out of a thin layer of rolled out bread dough, covered in crème fraîche, sliced unions and small pieces of bacon. Seriously, this dish is out of this world! I’ve already been missing it and i have only been back for a couple of days. Almost every restaurant in the city centre serves Flammekueche.
2. Visit Petite France
Petite France, the historic centre of the city. In 1988 the historic quarter of Strasbourg became UNESCO World Heritage and this is the wonderland i’ve been telling you about. You find yourself in different era or even a complete different world.
3. Be amazed by the Notre-Dame.
To be honest i have never been really interested in churches and cathedrals, but wow this one is a real beauty. It’s just so huge and impressive. And do you want to know the best part? Definitely the panoramic terrace on top of the cathedral. Unfortunately there’s no elevator, so you’ll have to take the stairs –the never ending kind- all the way to the top, but when you make it there, you won’t be disappointed. It’ll give you a view over the entire city, so yes its so worth it! Entering the cathedral is free, but heading to the rooftop will cost you €5,-
4. The Cathedral Light-show
In summer months there is an amazing light-show projected on the side of the cathedral every night! These shows are free and start at 10.15 every night, they last 15 minutes and every half our it will start again. The times might change so make sure to ask this at the tourist office, which is located across the street. This is a great activity to do after dinner, it was so romantic!
5. Go Shopping!
Strasbourg is great for shopping, there are lots of different shops, there’s a Sephora for make-up fans like me! If you’re a big spender you should definitely visit Galaries LaFayette because here you will find the big brands like Prada, Michael Kors and Gucci. Budget shopper will also have enough choice and Galaries LaFayette is also fun for just window shopping, that’s what i did!
